The point of Debian Sid is that it is broken.  It is a bit messed up 
because they have put loads of new things in.

You could just run Sarge instead.  Its only 2 days behind if it isn't 
broken.  You don't need to be that up to date do you?

You can compile everything yourself on debian.  But then you just get 
into dependency hell with the build-depends.

Also, I've been told recently that the gcc optimisations for the 
different x86 processor types are not always useful.
