Where is the message appearing?  In syslog?  What is the full message?

Does it say which process is respawning?  Does the message come from 
init?

Most probably is that init is trying to run X, but it is running a 
script or something that fails.   Anyway, init will try and restart.

Also, maybe you have a serial or modem  console/login enabled?  Not 
having a modem plugged in could cause this if it causes the gettys to 
stop.
