What's Wrong With Open Source? ... With Some Thoughts On Fixing It
      ------------------------------------------------------------------
                                Dave Fisher
                                 GBDirect

2005 will not be the year that 'Linux conquers the desktop'. Growth
will be slow and organic, depending on direct personal experience
with little prospect of it becoming a majority concern any time soon.
This is a problem for everyone in the open source community.
If open source does not achieve sufficient gravity quickly enough to
shape the general environment to its needs, it will be shaped by
                 hostile elements in that environment.

This talk highlights some of the practical threats to open source,
some fundamental weaknesses in its default responses and some
possible alternatives. Although the objects of this talk are geeks
and technology, its subjects are power, strategy and tactics. Those
who delude themselves into believing that IT can be separated from
                            politics will hate it.

Rolling out an Open source MLE in Leeds Schools.
               -------------------------------------------------
                                 Chris Tebb

Introducing a project to roll out the moodle (http://www.moodle.org)
open source Managed Learning Environment in Leeds schools,
as an alternative to the closed source, closed content
                        Microsoft MLE Class Server 3.0

The project involves three Leeds high schools, with the assistance
of three Final Year Project students from the University Computing
Department. The three schools are very keen to get this working,
and we have the full support of a key member of staff at Education
Leeds. We seek comments, suggestions and any offers of some much
needed assistance to allow the project to succeed.
