If you're just wanting to play with things, and see if they work, I hightly
reccommend Knoppix (http://www.knoppix.org). It's a linux "live" CD which
contains most software you're likely to want (2.4 and 2.6 Kernels, KDE,
OpenOffice, Mozilla, GIMP).

This is often a bit slower and more memory hungry than a normal linux distro
because it runs directly fom the CD. It does however men you can try
everything out without having to touch your harddisk. You can get knoppix to
install to you harddisk, though I wouldn't really reccommend this.

For a proper install I'd recommend Ubuntu, Mandrake or Fedora Core.
