[Hudlug] burning a movie to dvd

I have managed to download that movie file but for some reason haven't 
been able to burn it to DVD as it is an .avi file.
There maybe free tools in Linux which would convert it to a format able 
to be played in a DVD player but I haven't found a free one in Windows.
I might have to copy it to a USB stick before I get my desktop sorted 
out until I can find a way of burning it to DVD if it can be transfered 
to a USB stick as it is a fairly large file.
