Michael, I may not be understanding you properly, but here are my thoughts.

I used Gnucash for a good while, but it's a couple of years ago, and I can't 
remember details.  However, the basic idea is that the overall account 
represents your personal wealth (or otherwise :-) ).  Your bank accounts, 
expense accounts, cash in your pocket, credit card bills etc., are all 
sub-accounts of the master account.  It's into these that you enter the 
details.
