Just to correct myself, BASH was infact created in 1987, based on the
Bourne shell, which was written in 1978, I don't have a 1978 vintage
copy of the Bourne shell to hand to test if this function is in there,
however I have been reliably informed it was a feature in the Korn
shell, which dates back to 1982. I would be surprised if Korn was the
first implementation of the concept, and would imagine that it does
infact date from the late 70's, this is however merely speculation.

Thanks
