On Kittys recomendation I got a thinkpad X31 from ebay last year and
it's awesome. 1.4 gig cpu, 1 gig ram and a 40 gig hard drive. It runs
the latest ubuntu fine although without any compositing or spinny cubes
and it only cost me £200.
