Kevin I am interested. I would like to put UBUNTU onto my laptop as a dual
boot and also onto my desktop. The laptop is on XP and the desktop is Vista.
I do not feel confident about doing this myself. There is also, apparently a
question about the number of disk divisions on the laptop.

Any help would be wonderful.
The Ubuntu installation is very easy and required minimal involvement
and knowledge, It will automatically partition your hard drive leaving
your Windows partitions intact and duplicate over setting, bookmarks,
emails and documents to your ubuntu partition if you so wish.

I'd give it a try and ask about any problems you have (if you encounter
them) after.
If you do try Blake make sure you backup your important documents first,
just incase someone does go wrong.

I am sure Kevin will be able to help, as he offered. It can be nice the
first time having someone explain the process and whats going on.

I was trying to help Blake with this install at the klug meet andactually
there's a big issue with this install that would make automatic partitioning
a bad idea.

Currently the disk is deviding into two partions that take up the whole
disk- a C: and D: (as an extended partion) drive and he wished to use the
free space on the C: drive in order to install ubuntu.

So we fired up QTparted, as it's always easier to do fiddly partitioning
with a gui. We then shrunk the C: drive giving us some free space.
Next up was to create a 1 gig swap partion - no problems
We then went to create our / partion and qtparted refused due to the number
of extended partions.
To cut a long story short i think the only way we could have done it was to
shrink the c: partion, create a swap partition, grow the exteneded partion
into the free space, then shrink the D: drive and use the free space for the
/ partition.

On the basis he hadn't got a backup there was no way i was going to carve
his disk up so much as although qtparted is preety damm god there is always
a chance things might go wrong.

the only other option was a wubi instal, but as noone at the meeting had an
experience od wubi we decided that was a bad idea as well.
Yes I was going to ask if any of the presentations can be uploaded as I
didnt note down the interesting sites Dan mentioned. BTW I've had a look
at Google Cal and in the US at the moment they are providing text reply
to add events. Only a matter of time before it hits here I think.
Yes Blake did mention that to me. I'm just the other side of town so I
can pop round sometime in the next couple of weeks or so.

Email me Blake off list and we can arrange something. It's quite handy
having someone around for a problematic first install. If it goes badly
wrong it could put you off.
