I'll have to make a note of that somewhere, I have gone back to Debian lately with mixed results and feelings but one thing I do like is the smaller font on the TTY bigger screens on average make the old 80x40 look a little too big on my screen. Not to mention getting more words on is useful when I'm trying to work out the problem with my graphics card.

In short, I like the new TTY configuration and I think that changing it in the general distribution is good to show people that they can change it. Perhaps the documentation to change it back could have been provided with release/change notes.

As is often the case, the real information was on page 3 of a Google search.
Install the console-setup package

Edit /etc/default/console-setup, the file is well commented, set font
and size to suit.

/etc/init.d/console-setup restart

I'm glad you raised the question, it's been annoying me for a while now,
and had been wondering how to deal with it.
