NAT = Network Address Translation<div>There is a translation of IP addresses (the phone numbers computers use to connect to each other) managed by the VM software, this can cause problems when you try to communicate with other devices on the network.</div>
<div><br></div><div>Easy thing to try is to change this to 'bridged' where the VM software then makes the virtual machine more independent. Advantage of this is that the translation does not occur making the network stuff more transparent. NAT on the other hand is easier to configure for setting up the VM.</div>
<div><br></div><div>Once the configuration is changed restart the VM. it might then see the shared printer easily.</div><div><br></div><div>How is your internet configured? is it managed by a router of some sort using DHCP of is the internet connected directly to the host computer?</div>

Those are the sort of questions I should have covered first. I am
using the very simplest of self-setup so the VirtualBox has found
its own connection to my PC and the startup box says it is NAT
(whatever that means - I'm not very clued-up - just a satisfied
Linux user).<br>

The printer is one of two, the other is an Okipage 14ex laser page
printer. Both are plugged into USB sockets on the desktop Linux PC
and Ubuntu just found them and installed them. I've checked their
names in the printer setup dialogue and used those names in the
Windows dialogue. What's so irritating is that under PCLOS it 'just
worked'.<br>

I took the plunge and installed Ubuntu 11.04 under Unity.
Bit of a steep learning curve but very interesting.
Everything seems to have been installed OK.<br>

My one big need is VirtualBox to run my Sage accounts under
windoze. That also installed OK but the existing printer
links don't work as they did when the Linux was PCLOS. I
used to have the printer under PCLOS/VB/windoze as a network
printer with the address as:<br>

and it worked fine.<br>

I've checked under Unity and the printer still has that name
and the properties show that it is ticked as 'shared' but
the VB/Windows doesn't find it. So I uninstalled it and
tried again with no luck<br>

Am I doing something silly here? Is there a different form
of address under Unity/Gnome. I have no experience of the
latter as previously the systems was KDE.<br>
