I presume your aim is cross training into the IT industry? <br>
<br><ul><li>LPI: In all honesty, most people (outside of those found in LUGs) are either not aware of the LPIC exams or aren't specificity looking for them (or don't care for them) on a CV, they are far more interested in real world experience.</li>
<li>CCNA: Might well be more valuable but is outside of my personal area of expertise/experaince.</li><li>Database skills: If you want to work as a DBA or sys admin are very useful. I have a background in sys admin work but have been a DBA (specialising in data warehousing) for some years now. The skills you want to work as a sys admin are very different to those that you want to have as a DBA/Developer role.<br>
</li></ul>My advice is to teach yourself in spare time (if you are unemployed at present just go for it for 9-5 when not job hunting) by installing linux, mysql apache etc... thinking about common business scenarios to try out. If you can configure a home network from spare hardware (I used to pull hardware out of the bins at uni back in the day) or using virtual machines. Make it, break it and then fix it. At least its experience.<br>
<br>If you can stump up the cash for a course, think about the specifics of what you want to work with or are interested in.<br><br>The best thing is if you can find and take a junior role somewhere that will allow you to pick things up as you go along. Most places value experience over just the paper (1 year doing a job is worth more than 1 year studying for it).<br>

Unlikely, because there won't have been a general election by then. Once those areas have been regenerated your job will no longer be there because it will have been transferred to a far-away country with a dubious human rights record where everyone is far more educated and much more willing to work than us lazy-arses.<br>
