Steam is very easy and has many benefits but freedom is the cost. Much like with cloud computing you are relying not only on the internet but also on a separate entity to give you access to your software and data.
Although it's proprietary the PS3 gives you more freedom than if you used steam on your free operating system. For example when you purchase a PS3 and a game you don't need to prove your purchase, you simply own them. If you wanted to lend or give your game to a friend you can, because it's yours. What's more is Sony can't walk into your home and take your PS3 away from you, again because it's yours.
My advice would be to stick to the PS3 and maybe check out desura which is a competitor to steam and is free software.

I don't see freedom as the cost. I see freedom as the result, especially for the hundreds of millions of people who use it anyway. No longer will I have to reboot the computer to play Half Life 2 or Portal or Team fortress Classic/2
