Don't know if it helps but rather than pub has anybody ever tried
to get a room at a social club. A lot of them have rooms , and
would be glad of the trade, no idea of cost though it shouldn't be
a lot

The point being cost and one we have to recoup back by those present
as we have no subscription so if few turn up it can be quite a bit
for those to stump up, of course if lots turn up its not so bad. Yes
I admit if we were to go down a proper paid subscription then rooms
won't be a problem but then with that comes doing AGMs, having a
constitution, chasing people for subs, banking, the list goes on. I
don't have time for that personally and if anyone has and wants to
take that on then I'm happy to hand it over.

One way or the other there are 'challenges' to over come, and with
the current setup then there is less admin to do. Again this is
double edged as it means I don't have it as a priority to make
something more to boost it.

There has been a user group for over 10 years now, and the Linux
environment has changed, one we've brought up a number of times
about if there is a need for the user group. Those of you who
support KLUG, thank you, its good to know it still has some life
left in it.

The drive as always is use it or lose it. We need locations that
allow free us so we can be as open to as many people as possible.
With bums on seats things will change.

Yes I do agree that social clubs are a good option, however you
often need to be a member and then have limited numbers of guests.
If we need multiple locations that then becomes an expense
individually. If we then need to use the room as a non-member then
raising funds. Years ago I would fund some of this via my private
Linux work but I don't do that (private Linux work) any more so
sponsorship is one way. But then we don't really do much advertising
for a sponsor to benefit from.

It's quite frankly a night mare :-)

Anyway we're still looking at options and will check out a few pubs
as that may be a quick one to get something back running. Any offers
will be looked at though.

Thanks
PS sorry for the rant. :-)
agreed we've tried this before and it's not always worked well. I suggest
hangouts is the best way forward though as it should just work for
everyone. No need for a mumble server & client.

No worries.
I like the sound of pub meets. It's quite informal, not that klugs where
formal!
Quite :-)
But should we want to display anything on your projector it could be a
bit awkward unless they had a function room for us to use.
Could be worth looking into those really small pocket projectors and we
can then shine it against the wall.
If we go down the route of trying to obtain grants on a semi-regular
basis I can gather the necessary information if needed. I would also not
mind in becoming a trustee though not the treasurer....!!! :-$
LOL thanks. Its not a route I wan't to go down. I've been resisting it
ever since we started as that was from where we first came.
As for virtual meetings I'm sure many of you know there are a few ways to
achieve this;
- Mumble,
- Jitsi,
- Hangouts,
- Skype,
- Combinations of the above,
- IRC,
- Etc.
We've tried and its not been great we could have another go, on a casual
basis its not workable but a fixed time maybe. Google hang out may be the
best way as it supports a fair number of people. We've had this discussion
before about trying mumble too.

Thanks Glen I have grabbed a copy and will take a look.
One of the venues has now gone so I'm just waiting on one other and
hopefully that option will provide us with some dates.
Other than that, we will need to pay for venues. I have found I can
obtain a grant which would help but that also requires a more official
structure of the user group and one I don't want to pursue as I don't have
the time to focus on it. If anyone wants to discuss that option as they do
have the time then please speak up (it in essence revolves around creating
bank accounts, having policies and a general proper club format).
Another option considering we are lacking venues is to go to social
meetings in pubs and seeing most are empty they perhaps won't mind. Just
makes it difficult to ensure we have space to sit and of course then limits
the options as far as doing things. But if you want to have face to face
meetings then this may be the way.
The worst case is we go completely virtual and only have online meetings
or just continue to exist on this mailing list. The same old conundrum.
