I wish we could get away from this either/or. They're both useful.

"perl -i -e 's/x/y/g;' *" is vastly quicker, and for some mindsets much easier,
than pointyclicking an editor through 50,000 textfiles. But I'd hate to have to
edit a .wav file without a picture of the waveform where I can point to the
place where I want an action to happen. They're both good, for those that
like them.

Though, the cli tools are much better documented and easier to find out
about.
