btw there is now a local Perl group at:

www.northwestengland.pm.org

Join us on the mailing list - we meet monthly and are tdoing one month  
as a social and the next as a technical meeting. Please note that  
everyone is welcome whether you use perl or not, the idea is for us to  
meet and mix with people who are new to, adverse to, unknowing of,  
interested about high level languages (like Perl) or just damned  
sociable, or just have a drink and chat about the shape of anything  
that's interesting.
