I agree that the usb stick might be the problem.

However, you could try the following:

If it has a DVD drive or you can get a USB external DVD drive,
download and burn the .iso

Test the usb stick on a "normal" machine to see if it boots and then
just exit the install

Check the BIOS again for anything USB related and see if there is
any entry which enables/disables booting from usb although common
sense suggests that if it is on the menu, it should be enabled

Howdy.

On a Dell I had my hands on a few weeks
back you had to boot into the EFI or whatever
they've called it and enable legacy BIOS mode.
That should give you the option to call up a good
olde fashioned boot menu when the PC boots.

how you get on.

Hi all

My XPS 13 arrived today. Sadly not
the 'Sputnik' developer edition with
Ubuntu pre-installed (it wasn't
available on the UK Dell website), but
Windows 8 instead. Had a brief play with
W8, and it's the dog everyone says it
is!

Anyway, I've got the latest 64 bit
Ubuntu on a USB stick but am struggling
to get the machine to boot from the USB.
I found some instructions here

But some of the labels used don't
match my machine and I am very nervous
about BIOS fiddling!

I don't want to keep Windows, so none
of the issues about dual booting effect
me, but equally I don't want to brick my
brand new laptop!

Anyone know of any really easy to
follow instructions, or happy to talk me
through it?
