    <p>Why do you want to delete partitions? Is there a partition that
      immediately follows the root filesystem partition? I presume
      you're not attempting to delete the partition containing the root
      filesystem - what is the partition table output from fdisk?</p>
    <p>I've never tried to delete partitions that are mounted, but if
      you need to delete a (non-root) partition, can you unmount it
      first? (or in the case of swap, use swapoff)?<br>

                using LVM - you can also do it if you're not using LVM
                by editing the partition table, then running partprobe.
                Then, if you have an ext3 or ext4 file system, you can
                expand the filesystem to fill the available space in the
                partition whilst it's mounted using resize2fs.</p>
