Hi Ladies and Gents,

It's been interesting listening in on the whole "lug revival" - so
I'm going to throw my own experiences in as a Linux user and an
active member of several car clubs.

As a full time employee of a large engineering firm, my time spent
reading personal emails (such as that attached to this mailing list)
is limited, and while I have a smart phone, I'm not comfortable
using it to write long wordy response (such as this is - I've got
several PC's of varying OS and specification that are far more
comfortable for that)

That said, I do get time to log into various fora where I'm an
active participant (currently I'm an active member of several car
clubs, the microchip support forums and several other "normal"
forums). It's easy to spend 10 minutes on my work PC, looking at
what's going on and socialising in that manner - so if you're
looking to revamp things, why not start there? I signed up to the
Lug because I wanted to discuss my trials and tribulations and share
that with the world. The problem with a mailing list is that it's
not very easy to read and multiple discussions blur into a
meaningless mess. I'd rather be active on a public forum with a
daily or weekly digest of activity on there posted in my direction
so that I could go and browse at my leisure (and let's be honest
here, it's our leisure time that this eats into). For much the same
reason, I signed up with the debian and linuxquestions forums. A
lincs lug forums would allow me to socialise with local people who
also have a shady geek interest :)

If you make it easy for people to participate, people will do so.

As for handover etc, I'm not surprised that there's going to be some
friction, change does that. Personally I think it could have been
handled a little better, but then youthful enthusiasm has a tendency
to grate when the old dinosaurs are woken (that's not a pop at
anyone, just an observation and comparison analogy)

I'd love to be able to come along to lug meets, as a mobile car nut,
with a passion for software (admittedly I've not written as much
*nix SW as I should have) I'm willing to attend these things
anywhere in the uk, but I've got other time commitments as well, so
if I can make them I'll try.

Something so often seen in the car (fora) world is the "I can't get
them to do what I want them to do, so I'll setup an alternative NEW
and EXCITING forum" especially from newer members, and so things
fracture. I'd hate to see that happen here, so I hope that some
sense and decorum is applied prior to any overzealous action and
that people don't get upset by what might be said. Likewise, don't
take this as support for a change in the management - this is my
support of the lug.

As I have said previously in this thread, the current members

What I would like to suggest is this:

1. As a whole decide on what we want to achieve.

2. If required, form an 'official' admin board (Chair,
Treasurer, PR etc)

3. Make it work

There are sufficient members available to get the democratic
process in motion.

I will, therefore, start a thread here for members'
requirements, suggestions and thoughts on how we want the LUG to
be shaped, run and administered.
