Hi Becky and everyone,

many thanks for the words of welcome! yep, i've definitely heard of
Jonathan. i used to be project manager for the Vinux project, linux
for the visually impaired, produced by Tony Sales from the royal
national college for the blind and we got talking on the mailing
list. Jonathan is trying to produce updated versions of ubuntu, but
his releases are quite buggy as he uses the latest and greatest
software which hasn't been tested, something that the vinux project
disagreed with. nice guy though. i will take a look at the other
lugs and see about joining them. i had considered producing a
version of linux for the visually impaired based on arch linux, as
noone's really done that yet. the problem i'm finding though is
hardware support. ubuntu/debien releases seem to do an awful lot
when it comes to hardware detection/support in the background. i'd
also be interested in any meetings that take place across
lincolnshire between lug members. other lugs have local events like
bring a laptop/gadget days where they all meet up to discuss their
latest linux based projects, perhaps we could also organise a
similar event if its not already been done? this particular lug
seems to have been quite quiet over the last few years.

Russell, your comments are quite interesting. i stopped using ubuntu
ever since the 12.04 release because i just couldn't get on with
unity. i'd much rather use gnome/gnome fallback, that was partly
what caused me to switch to arch, the ability to build from the
ground up. more work's involved, but in the end its definitely worth
it. linux mint could also be a good option though, though i must
confess i haven't tried it in a few years so don't know what the
state of accessibility is. what desktop does it use?

thanks for reading,
Re your comments on Ubuntu 14.04, I moved to Linux with
Ubuntu 8.10 I think it was, upgraded at each release until
they created the Unity desktop, which I hated. I then moved
over to Debian, which is good and stable but unfortunately
is slow to move to new package releases, so a couple of
years back I moved to Linux Mint, which is based upon Ubuntu
and follows their release schedule but, in my view, has a
much better desktop.
I definitely recommend that you have a look at it, certainly
the best distro I have used.
Hi Mo.

Just to let you know that I received your email no
problem. I live in Scunthorpe and run a dual boot
system on Windows 7 Professional and Ubuntu 14.04. I
also run a couple of other machines on Ubuntu 13.10.
I must confess that although a big fan of open source
software I am not a great fan of 14.04 it has been a
major headache to set up cleanly and has lost the
graphic drivers on more than one occasion. Compared to
earlier renditions I feel it has been rushed in its
development and shows it.

I trust that I may hear from you again sometime.
Hello folks.

My name is Mobeen Iqbal, though i'm known as Mo to
most people. We recently moved to lincolnshire, and
i'm based about half an hour away from skegness in a
small hamlet called hannah. I'm a visually impaired
user of the linux operating system, and am currently
trying to build a custom talking distribution of
linux based on either arch or Ubuntu for the
visually impaired. I just wanted to check if my
message reaches the list, and also to begin
networking with people around lincolnshire. I
believe strongly in the strength of open source
software, and have worked for many years to supply
computers with open source software to the blind
across the country. i hope to hear from some of you
in due course.
