Thanks for all the advice.  I think I'll start by just trying to sort 
out the X server.  For now, I've got work to do.

I thought that woody was the most recent stable distro.  Mainly I use 
Suse, but I thought it was time I ventured further, and had an 
installation I could play with as well as one that had to be usable all 
the time.  That's why I now have a second Suse, a Debian and possibly 
Fedora.
