Hello!, and welcome.

I just wanted to comment on this:

>but I absolutely SWEAR by Damn Small Linux as a rescue-CD distro -
and it's based on >Debian.

As I have started to use DSL with QEMU for some tasks under XP (I have
an HP Laptop which devices just shout whenever I install any
distribution).

I have not been able to attend to any of the meetings (PhD life is
[un]fortunately very very busy) but from the list I can tell you the
group is quite active (at least a monthly "serious" meeting and one
Pub meeting).

Unfortunately I am using Linux as end user now (no time for hacking
:-( ) and I am only programming in Java (does not count as "Linux" by
its of write once debug everywhere nature).

Of course I am aiming to install Ubuntu on my laptop in a near future,
I want to see that WiFi and ati card scream MWAHAHAHAHAHA.

Cheers,

Omar
