However, it is possible to set a password for the root account, it just
isn't done during installation. Type "sude bash" and give your user
password. This gives you a root shell, then type "passwd" and give a new
password for the root user. Now you can use su with the root password.

Having said all that, it's usually easier and safer to do things the way
Ubuntu wants you too, using sudo.
