[Liverpool] Fwd: Introducing A Podcast And Book For Newcomers To Linux

Hi thanks for that,

Just a bit of food for thought. I just arrived from buying the Linux
Format magazine from a library at the city centre when some guy that
saw me grabbing the magazine asked me if I used Linux.

This guy tried to use Linux (Kubuntu) and for him it was difficult. He
asked me for some advice (as a user) and I only thought of two things,
first I told him to subscribe to the LUG (to what he answered that he
was not from Liverpool, and I told him that I was sure there IS a LUG
with 'friendly people' wherever he lives) and the second thing was to
try "Ubuntu" to what he answered that he was using Kubuntu =oP

What would you do? He knew that Linux is better than windows (so, the
story of "Linux has no viruses, no spyware, etc, etc etc" was of no
use), what recommendations would you give? ... Just in case I have
another encounter like that =o)

Oh and as a side comment, I was really amazed when my sister-in-law
(who came to visit from Mexico on vacations) talked about Linux (she
is computer-illiterate), she asked me : "isn't it true that Linux is
more difficult than Windows". My answer was that Linux is more
difficult than Windows to setup, but that once it is setup it is easy
(at least that is the more simple way I could put the hardware
incompatibility and configuration issues I see).

Anyway, I believe that, as Linux becomes easier to use and more
broadly know, it is useful to know how to communicate other people the
"goodness" and properties of our beloved PinguinOS

Cheers,

Omar.
