[Liverpool] Diaspora

It is critical that a floss solution to the social network problem is built on established open standards, but there still needs to be the interfaces to bring it all together and bridge the gaps with new open protocols. What's disappointing for me about diaspora is that its not delivered anything we didn't already have when we're already behind proprietary social platforms. If diaspora had built on the foundations laid by status.net we might have got somewhere by now, instead they sought to reinvent it which isn't innovative nor a great way of generating interest. No doubt we're around the corner from the next big proprietary thing and attention will move on.

For me, geeks already solved this problem in the late 90s. Have a
website and an atom feed.

You can even have a separate feed for your micro-blogging, pictures, etc.

Comments/friends lists can be handled safely using OpenID to authenticate.

All these services provide are bells and whistles on top of this core
functionality. If you really value freedom over those whistles, just
keep it on truly open protocols.
