That place was pretty cool actually. As long as we could get the bigger room it could be pretty good I think. Interesting that you mention debating as this is mostly what happened at the Wetherspoons last time. Not about open source but mainly about films, music, which numbering system is best and 80's synthesizers. Now there's an odd bunch of topics :)

I'm sure we could mix in some open source and other techy subjects though. I dunno how others will feel but it might be a good idea to see what the people at the pub have to say. Can't hurt to find out and then decide if it's the right venue

Did we get wifi in there? I can't remember but saw a few people playing with netbooks and so on. Just curious

On Fri, May 8, 2009 at 1:21 AM, Paul Leech <pleech@gmail.com> wrote:
We had a good time there a few weeks ago and I noticed they liad on a room and provided some food for the cribbage night which the LUG duly scoffed. It is a snall, nice friendly pub, near the News from nowhere place and could become a regular haunt. I don't live in Liverpool but go to visit my brothers there often and would be willling to sound them out on this next time I am in town and let you know the outcome.

Also, I think the pressure of having a full blown presentation, although interesting and welcome when they come about is great but we should be able to come up for with talking points on the massive area of open source software for when no presentations are scheduled. We could argue loads of points, all we need is someone to raise a debating area e.g Are Microsoft a scum sucking bastard of an organisation? to get the juices flowing. I would welcome some constructive criticism to add to my armoury (I have just converted my brother to open source software after the years of disappointment suffered at the hands of Micro$oft. He didn't know there was an alternative until I tutored him in the arts of freedom.

Lets do it.

See you all at the next LUG. Also, I didn't get the job I went for as they were still struggling with micros$hit did not see any need to change (peasants) so if anyone knows of any purely Linux jobs going let me know,
Hi, Didn't know there was one on but I'll try and nip in to say hello. Is it
in FACT bar again? I'll see if there's anyone about on my way to LSC and
perhaps on the way back too. I'll be around that area so hopefully I'll bump
Well, I'm just leaving the bar, to do Small Steps to
by 7pm for the hackspace meeting, then off to drop
in on LivLUG, so I think we're bound to bump into
Well, not everything went to plan AT ALL this month. Infact I think this is the biggest failure we've had
so far :)

Me, Jo, Andy and Simon all got into the Ropewalks quite early in the evening, we noticed the bar maid was
a little stressed due to drunks but we managed to stay there for a while. At 7:30ish me and Jo wandered
over to check if any stragglers had gone LSC, only to be greeted by another group who were using the
space. At 8pm the Ropewalks turfed us out...

Anyway, we eneded up in the Welkin (Wetherspoons) and stayed there for the rest of the night. We suspect
the Ropewalks has changed to old management and they're shutting at 8pm again as usual.

I'm currently talking with LSC to see what happened to the booking, and I think the Welkin will serve well
as a after meeting pub, unless anyone else has any suggestions.

Hello everyone,

About a month ago I said I was planning to do a talk on simulating computers
in Python. Most people said there's no way I'd have that done in a month and
they were right!! In fact, I'm probably further away from having a useful
talk than I was last month :)

It turns out that as you get in to the nuts and bolts of trying to simulate
the circuitry of a computer using software that there is rather a lot to it.
As you might expect, the circuit is pretty complicated.

The upshot of this is that to try and communicate how the whole circuit
works in a single 40 minute slot is pretty tough. Instead I would like to do
two talks.

In the first talk I'm going to focus on the circuitry of the machine. The
outline is given below. Rather than tackling the whole circuit, I'm going to
focus on a few interesting parts of the circuit.

- A brief, high-level description of the computer and its parts.
- The ALU - the bit that does the computation.
- The program counter.
- A simple memory circuit.
- An overview of the input and output devices.

At the end of the talk we'll have a little program running on the machine
that says: "Hello World!"

In the second talk, I'll walk through the steps required to build a compiler
that targets the machine. The initial plan is to make a "Python-like"
language that compiles down to machine code for the simple computer I've put
together.

What do you think?

Cheers,

Simon
I must have missed you by a fraction at the Ropewalks, when Richard and I
got there the door was open but the barmaid was kicking everyone out. Didn't
see any Luggers there. Good job you sent me a txt or I'd have been lost. The
Welkin seems a decent pub but it might be good to try and find something
nearer to the venue if we can. I'll have a think. Problem is a lot of the
pubs around Bold St are either really small or not suitable. I went to Tabac
at the top of Bold St with the Script Frenzy group a couple of weeks ago and
it was great. There were about 8 of us. Not exactly a pub but very
comfortable and it was quiet, they even had cake and a nice area with a big
projector screen. I don't know how they'd feel about 15 geeks turning up but
I reckon they'd be fine. As long as you're buying drinks they don't care...
unless it's the Ropewalks of course :)

It's only just up the road from LSC and FACT. Just a thought. Might not be
suitable I dunno
