Hello list,

As the meeting in December is already arranged, I have an idea for
the meeting in January (for those who haven't fully succumbed by
then after a rigorous diet of Christmas Pudding, mince pies,
radioactive antelope sausages and other Christmas paraphernalia).
Note to self - something is off with that list, needs
double-checking.

I am using chan_mobile with Asterisk to connect a mobile phone
over bluetooth and route the incoming calls from the mobile into
my Asterisk box. Chan_mobile doesn't seem to be receiving a lot of
love these days, so a useful thing to do might be to update the
page at: http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/chan_mobile with test
results for as many mobile models we can get our hands on. This
page is referenced from many forum and blog posts when it comes to
handset compatibility - so it would be really good if it would
include more models.

I've so far tested all the mobiles I have around the house (that
have Bluetooth) and added the results in. I was thinking that if
people on the LUG could rummage through the crannies and nooks of
their dwellings and offices, and gather as many Bluetooth enabled
mobiles they could find - we could use the session in January to
test them and upload the results to the page.

What you need to do:
1. Find, beg, borrow or, err, borrow as many different bluetooth
enabled mobiles of any sort you can. We mainly need mobiles that
either don't show on the wiki page above, or the ones which show
with a question mark and can do with more testing. Even older
models are important - as this application involves a phone
sitting next to an Asterisk box and can be plugged into its
charger permanently (old batteries are not a problem). So if a
model proves to be particularly suitable - people will go on Ebay
and source older models or re-use stuff lying around doing
nothing.

2. Bring the mobile with you - including a charger in case it is
an older mobile which doesn't hold charge very well.

I could bring an Asterisk box (cleverly disguised as a netbook -
nobody will suspect it!) and one or two bluetooth dongles. Then,
for each mobile model present:

1. Connect to Linux bluetooth subsystem on the Asterisk "server".
2. Configure Asterisk chan_mobile for the phone.
3. Attempt test incoming call.
4. Optional - if we can source some suitable sim-cards with
minutes - attempt outgoing call.
5. Test in Asterisk for SMS compatibility.
6. Upload results to the wiki page.

Even if we only manage 5-10 models - it would still be a great
contribution to a valuable community resource. As the list doesn't
seem to include any Android models, it would be an opportunity for
our resident Android fans to get involved as well :-)

If anybody is interested in bringing their own Asterisk box along
- all the better - it will increase the number of mobiles we can
test in the allocated time.

Is there any interest in this?

Alternatively, do people here think this might be suitable for a
different setup/place/group/time then our regular monthly meeting?
