Chris

I reckon the problem lies with the BIOS as it does not have drivers in built
for USB and as GRUB launches before the OS does, GRUB cannot access it.

This is a stab at it and might be quite hairy fairy but it does seem to hold
water for me - care to blast this one out of the brine?

Subject: [Malvern] Booting from an external USB drive using Grub

Does anyone have any clues how to get Grub to boot a kernel which runs
with its root on an external USB drive? I have a small Linux
installation on the disk but it's gonna be such a faff to clone the MS
shite on the same drive onto a bigger one and reinstall Linux. I figured
I'd just use the /boot I already have to boot the external disk, giving
me the whole of that space for a decent Linux installation.

Initrd seems to be the right way to go about this but I don't seem to be
able to copy, uncompress and mount my existing initrd image so I can
start messing around with it.

Any clues?

Chris
