[Malvern] Booting priveledges.

As it used to be, it booted up the X server OK as  user "geoff".
I had to su to become "root".

It would NOT allow me to boot as root, or become root other than by "su".

Now,  since I changed to Sarge,  I can log in as either root or as 
geoff,  but only
root can do  "startx".   User geoff gets told that there is no 
.Xauthority, or some
such.

It then stays logged in, but using the bog-standard  VGA mode,  no X server.

Unly root gets to startx,  and the X-server is lost again if I CTRL D to 
leave su.
