Geoff,

That's because Thunderbird installs by default with "autocheck mail on 
start-up" enabled, whereas KMail has it disabled. To knock it off in 
Thunderbird, go to Tools->Account Settings->Server Settings and uncheck 
"check for new messages at start-up".
