Hi,

At the CovLug recently they had someone talk about forensics. Part of
that is data recovery. He had a few tips for recovering hard disks.
Apparently if a disk isn't spinning up simply turning upside down can
help, apparently there are identical bearings top and bottom, but one
set typically get all the wear. He also claims that tips on the
internet involving heating up the hard disk can work too.

As far as software goes there's a program called photorec. Ubuntu
appears to have a good page on data recovery in general which includes
a mention of photorec. It's designed for recovering photo's but can
be tasked to find all sorts of things.

Of course this all assumes the problem isn't too serious.
