Ok, 2.4.22 doesn't crash any more, however..

SCSI subsystem driver Revision: 1.00
hdd: attached ide-scsi driver.
scsi0 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices
scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 0, scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 0x12 00 00 00 ff 00
hdd: lost interrupt
ide-scsi: The scsi wants to send us more data than expected -
discarding data
ide-scsi: [[ 12 0 0 0 ff 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 ]
]
ide-scsi: expected 256 got 352 limit 256
scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 1, scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 0x03 00 00 00 40 00
SCSI host 0 abort (pid 1) timed out - resetting
SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0.
SCSI host 0 channel 0 reset (pid 1) timed out - trying harder
SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0.
hdd: lost interrupt
ide-scsi: The scsi wants to send us more data than expected -
discarding data
ide-scsi: [[ 3 0 0 0 40 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 ]
]
ide-scsi: expected 64 got 82 limit 64

I can't see it as a scsi device still though.. more poking required.
