Then try the new installer. Debian have been working on a new generation
of installer for years which is modular and does hardware detection.
Progress is most advanced on i386 and the current version (beta2) seems
to work well for others. Whilst I've not tried it myself, it's certainly
worth a look and you will be helping the Debian Installer team further
by testing their code.
