I'd recommend an external wireless access point + a cheap second NIC for the
desktop.  There are some pretty nifty combined access point/wireless router/N-port hub around.
Some of them have a built in dhcp server and/or firewalling.
This will make your set up easier and more flexible if a little more expensive.
