As Peter says, samba should do what you want. I was a total newbie to 
networks/serving as well as Linux, but with a little guidance (this list is a 
very good place to get it) I managed to get it going a while back. 

One of the things to get used to in linux is that everything is configured 
with text files, and finding them and getting syntax right can be daunting - 
some of the gui's are useful to get started. I don't know what Ubuntu has as 
standard, but it might be worth setting up 'SWAT' and/or 'webmin'....

Yup - it seems Linux can do anything you want, as long as you know what that 
is!

PS - word of caution; I had a mare with printing over samba. If configured 
right, CUPS will let you use IPP directly and seems much more robust...
