Thanks, all. I will do the checks. By luck I use Knoppix live at work 
and also have a sysrescuecd to hand. It definately was 'windows-ish' 
behavior and why I used the word crash. Just got home so will go 
downstairs and see what I see.
Unfortunately I am in a night class on Thursdays for the next 8 weeks. I 
am sure to have some more questions later.
