You may end up getting lots of different opinions on this, but I would
just say pick at least a couple of alternative distributions and try
them.  See which you like and take it from there.

We have amongst us keen users of at least debian, ubuntu, mandriva,
fedora, gentoo and probably more.  The main think in my view is that you
try a few for yourself, rather than just using the one that someone else
recommends.  Any of the above are a good starting point for learning
more.
