Does that mean you got it working ok?
Yes it's working much better.

To finish the story: How?...

Hardware? Software? Bad cable? Bad cartridge? Operation error?
I think it was the drivers although I'm not sure why  since HP claim that the drivers on the 
old version of HPLIPS should be compatible with my printer, however I now have the HP
icon on my screen so I can play with the settings at will.

(Or is that a fun/long story for over food & beers this Thursday? ;-) )
Unfortunately I can rarely get out on a Thursday.
