Problem solved. I had extracted the tarball into folder on my desktop (seemed sensible at the time). Repeating the process, but into a nelwy made directory in usr/local/tuxmath everything worked fine (albeit with a bit of sudo and having to install the make program)<BR>

Tuxmath on netbook now better than on ubuntu desktop!<BR>

Maybe a daft question... did you follow the instructions to the 'T'?<BR>
Sometimes you have to just 'make', other times you have to run<BR>
'./configure' or run autoconf. It looks like the data subdirectory has<BR>
problems, so is there perhaps another tarball or a patch that provides<BR>
some kind of data (maybe under a separate license?)<BR>
