As I don't have the internet or wifi on the desktop worrying about someone breaking in would be largely redundant. Except for physical attacks I'm sure I'll be fine. As for distros, I get dvd's off nagazines etc. Unfortunately, I have to install extra software by walking to the library, downloading packages, getting home then finding I'm missing a dependency. That happened with trying to build koffice from source recently. I know how to fix it, but it is annoying.

Things would be a lot better if I had a job and could afford broadband again. Out of all the distro dvd's I own, backtrack has the most compilers and other useful things. I ought to put the clamav virus scanner on my computers in case I accidentally infect my Windows laptop through using usb memory sticks.

I did used to run opensuse and that was fine but I don't like the newer installers where you can't pick exactly what packages to install. I fiddle about with Pc-bsd and sabayon in virtualbox as well.

Cheers

Hi everyone.

I'm new to this Linux user group. Have been using Linux since 2003 and am
quite handy round a Linux system. I currently use backtrack linux on both
my computers, it has lots of things for breaking into networks. I use it
mainly for programming and running mysql. Has anyone else used that
particular distro? Does anyone else know how to use the offensive security
tools? I can't use them as it's a standalone machine and I can't afford
broadband yet.
Firstly welcome!

Secondly, I haven't used it since it was based on SLAX but I don't suppose
it's an entirely different beast.
The best way to get information I suppose would be to use the 'man' command
- say you wanted to see what flags nmap has to offer you could hit up "man
nmap", simple as that! If you're wanting more verbose details, say you want
to know what the tools is doing or if you're even using the wrong one then
google will have a trove on the backtrack tools - there sure is a high
interest in security 'testing' ;)

Not one to pry but have you considered a more mainstream distribution for
using for programming and (I assume you are hosting) hosting a mySQL
install? If someone does gain access to your system you've set them up for
hackers galore!

What tools do you need?
Ah - expert then. I've only been using it for a couple of years. I
find if you memorise the jargon and look earnest, people believe you
know what you are doing. :)

As to Backtrack (Debian based these days, if not even Ubuntu), one of
the recent Linux Format issues was "How to hack" and the magazine came
with a copy of "Damn Vulnerable Linux" (I think) and some other stuff
that is deliberately vulnerable to exploits so people can learn.
http://www.linuxformat.com/archives?issue=154

As luck would have it, I threw this very issue in the bin the other
week! But someone on the list may still have a copy.

It's best to run this kind of stuff either on a physically separate
network or under virtualisation using a virtual network (not NAT,
bridged or host). That way any, err, targeting errors don't nuke the
family photos.

Virtualisation is freely available using Virtual Box (download from
their site for the latest and greatest), although if you are not on
broadband you might find the downloads take a while. Should be a way
around that I would have thought; would one of your neighbours allow you
to leach for a little bit?

Hope to see you at one of the meets - you just missed a cracker on
signing and encryption; which reminds me, I am late with that summary
email I offered to send!

Cheers,

J.
Hey all,

After certain annoying circumstances, some crack addict robbing my house, I
am having to use a old Celeron laptop with 512mb ram. I have tried Damn
