A nice microkernel design, NT 3.1 (and 3.51) were excellently stable multitasking OS. It was when the merged the GDI and drivers in NT 4 when things started to go downhill. Before that a failure in a device driver couldn’t bring the machine down. The problem with Windows is the layers and layers of cruft built on top of that, multiple UI toolkits, backwards compatibility, the registry et al.</p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>The WSL in Windows 10 works fairly well, just so long as you don’t try and open files in it in Windows apps as it totally mashes up the permissions, often unrecoverably.</p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>A more plausible threat is that developers using Linux jump to Windows to get MS Office, all the apps, games etc. that live on there but use the WSL with Ubuntu (or similar) to get real work done. That has a greater chance of killing Linux on the desktop. Apparently the idea is now being planted into minds of a wider audience. It could make a perfect business sense for MS to exploit work of other people. Just don't expect any of the freedoms of Linux-based operating systems as we know them.<br>Now the next conspiracy theory, we'll know in a couple of years if it's true. MS leaked sources for legacy operating systems (you know, the ones not infested by numerous backdoors and privacy invasion) with an aim to excercise legal powers and eventually overtake all translation technologies like Wine and Proton.
