[Rustington] UBUNTU 12.04 LTS RELEASE

Not done it yet! But I did read in the release notes/known issues (for
edubuntu!) that a plain desktop background on login was possible -
which they said was a sign that the graphics processor is not up to
the 3D and to use a 2D login. I did mention that my 2D login was fine.
I also think my graphics ought to be up to 3D - hence the fiddling
with nvidia drivers. At first I thought my settings were still a bit
broken after a disaster with compiz, but then I found all users were
equally broken. I discovered that the keyboard for logout is good old
ctrl-alt-del (but it is sensitive to the numlock - so not c-a-. !) If
you're the only user it should get you back to the login screen where
you can click on the settings gear by your name and choose 2D.

To use usb stick for the iso there is a neat utility called unetbootin
that will do it all for you. It is very good, but does do some strange
things sometimes and doesn't have a highly polished interface but if
you overlook all that and just hope it works, then it mostly does!
When I tried it on my daughter's lenovo yesterday it had the decency
to tell me it couldn't run a 64 bit system on this x86 machine. Not
seen that before. I believe a multi boot system on stick is possible
but haven't found how to do it yet. Some of unetbootin's boot options
just don't work - I tried the memtest the other day and it bleated
that it had the wrong kernal :(
