This is still giving trouble, but using puppy linux on a usb stick
seems to run without any problems. In fact this is how I am
communicating with you now.
I am using a solid state drive and whe there is no trouble that's
fine, but it is more often just going grumpy or just switching off! If
I get a warning message it is generally kernel panic.
I tried an update on Fedora 20, which  have on a desktop. It got as
far as 55% and then froze.
