Al, can you post any output relating to PPP, or PPPD from
/var/log/messages? This may give us some further clue.

Is this is a modem that you have had working with Linux in the past?

Hi again,

Sorry for yesterdays post! I was just all too stressed.

If anyone could help me with getting gnome-ppp to work, I'd feel I at
least
had a fighting chance here.

The story so far!

Installed Mandrake 9 on my Pentium-Pro 166 64Mb RAM

Using Gnome as my Desktop/Window manager.

Try to connect using gnome-ppp.

In the status bar in Gnome-ppp, I see;

Run pppd,
Initialize modem,
Dialing,
pppd connecting,
pppd connection established.

Which is followed by the error message, "The pppd daemon died
unexpectedly"

The Mandrake linux help files pointed me to /etc/ppp/options which
contains;

lock
noauth
noipdefault
usepeerdns

Also the file /etc/ppp/pap-secrets which has the same username and
password
I've entered in the account details for Gnome-ppp.

Mark suggested  I try entering this into /etc/ppp/options;

asyncmap 0
Auth
user (your user name)

and to comment out the previous entries. I've tried this but It doesn't
even get past the dialing stage like this.

I'd look in the documentation but when I try to open it I just get the
error
message; "Failed to execute child process "$BROWSER" (no such file of
directory)"

Which is unhelpfull to say the least!

I need to know how to make use of the log files really. Maybe a topic
for
the next meeting?

I've got lots of other wierd stuff going on. But for the moment I'd be
happy to regain Internet access!

Thanks in advance.

Al
