Im thinking that the problem will be the same whatever client you use.
Are you running an identd daemon? is it loading at startup?

The identd daemon will give the irc server the response it requires, I
think(!). Someone with Mandrake will be able to tell you what its
called, but it would be a bit odd if it is not installed..

Failing this, could it be your firewall causing problems?
