[SLUG] Serial Modems

Hi Matt,

I am not overly suprised that you are having problems setting up your Lucent
WinModem. However out of all the WinModems I have come across these tend to
be the easiest to set up and get working under Linux. Good drivers for the
Lucent WinModem can be found here, http://www.heby.de/ltmodem however,
please note that they do not work with the Lucent AMR modems. In my
experience I always seem to have more luck compiling the code rather than
using the pre-compiled binary packages. If you do compile the code however
you will probably need the kernel headers installed beforehand. Another tip
I have found in the past is that just because the latest drivers don't work
does not mean that you won't get a result with older ones; how far back you
try is up to you.

Also check out http://www.linmodems.org as this is great resource for advice
on getting WinModems to work under Linux.

If you are just fed up with trying to get your WinModem to work then any
serial modem that plugs in via a COM port should be easy to get working.
Some serial modems may have advanced features that Linux doesn't or can't
use (for various reasons) but the modem should still be good for basic
Internet connections and faxing at least.

BTW (and for what it's worth) my serial modem is a 3COM (US Robotics)
Message Modem and works just fine under Linux. It's a shame my BT phone line
is about as good as wet string living out here in the sticks ;)

Hope this helps,

Kind regards,

Paul.
