Having tried to run xf86config with the trident card in i failed very badly,
so having replaced the S3 trio32/64 V+ card in desperation and tried to run
xf86config again entering the following when asked:

mouse type MS Intellimouse
Emulate 3 Buttons yes
mouse mounted default
keyboard MS Natural
Country UK
keyboard Layout default
When asked if i want XKB options i said YES (Don't know What this is!?)
Monitor SVGA 800 X 600 @ 56HZ
Vertical Sync range 50 - 70
Card selected from list S3 Trio 64V+
Video Card Memory 256K (A Guess)
When asked for Indentification / Description strings i selected Default
Colour Depth 24bit was rejected on a previous attempt so 16bit was selectedt

i get the following message in the log file xfree86.0.log, the contents of
XF86Config follow on afterwards, any thoughts or ideas as to whats going
wrong now! I feel as though i am now starting to make a little progress,
thanks to all those that are helping, its all very much appreciated.

# provide a better stack trace in the core dump to aid in debugging

# Option "NoTrapSignals"

# Uncomment this to disable the <Crtl><Alt><BS> server abort sequence
# This allows clients to receive this key event.

# Option "DontZap"

# Uncomment this to disable the <Crtl><Alt><KP_+>/<KP_-> mode switching

# Option "Dont Zoom"

# Uncomment this to disable tuning with the xvidtune client. With

# receive a protocol error.

# Option "DisableVidModeExtension"

# Uncomment this to enable the use of a non-local xvidtune client.

# Uncomment this to disable dynamically modifying the input device
