Apple goes after Unix users

Steven Deare, LinuxWorld

Unix users will be major beneficiaries of the upcoming 'Panther'
version of OS X, Apple Computer told the AUUG conference this morning.

Apple's Panther OS (version 10.3) will be bundled with an optional,
optimised version of X11, the X window system for GUIs, said Apple
software product manager Darren Sng.

"With this you can access open source applications like Open Office
and others," he said.

Sng gave the keynote presentation at the annual Australian Unix and
Open Systems User Group (AUUG) conference today at Sydney's Duxton
Hotel.

An X11 software development kit will be available, and will also help
developers that port from Linux, said Sng.

The Panther kernel will be synchronised with BSD 4.8, said Sng.
Panther will also continue OS X's support of IPv6.

Sng also said OS X suited Unix users via its support for languages
like Perl, Python, Ruby and PHP, and that OS X was synchronised with
FreeBSD's NFSv3.

Unix and Linux APIs like POSIX AIO, poll and dlopen have also been
added.

Apple's Panther will be available later this year.
