Hi Al,

Are you saying that you have just made these changes now based on this thread 
as that's what I am assuming? If so it looks very promising to me but if you 
already had these in your .muttrc then I'm totally puzzled.

I don't know Mutt at all but they seem fairly self-explanatory. Basically what 
you have done is to tell Mutt to use a Western European character set for 
both reading and sending messages (iso-8859-1 is a very common character set 
to use). Also you have specified 8 bits as that's what's required to show the 
extended characters in these character sets.

BTW during my experimentation with Mutt it took me five minutes to figure out 
how to compose a new mail. Room for a talk here I think ;)

PS: I've put a £ symbol here too as a comparison with your other off-list mail 
message that didn't contain any £ signs.
