Subject: [SLUG] 2 things

Morning all

2 things.

1) With regard to how we're going to structure SLUG meetings, I had
the idea of tying our meetings in with what is discussed in Linux
Format.

As a former PR person I know magazines tend to have what they call a
forward features plan, which is a plan for the year of major feature
stories. I thought we could tie our meetings to Linux Formats features
plan.

I got in touch with the ad guy there, and unfortunately, they don't do
such a plan. Our best bet, therefore, is to plan our meetings around
what Linux Format says it's doing "next month" (last page of the
magazine).

For instance. This month's magazine's main point of interest seems to
be Xen. May I suggest, then, that June's meeting takes Xen as a theme.

Perhaps someone will be able to bring along a machine and demonstrate
it. Perhaps someone will stand up and summarise it. Perhaps we'll end
up ripping the article apart and exposing its shortcomings.

At least everyone will have the chance to prepare beforehand. Those
who don't understand the article might be able to get their questions
answered. Those who already know all about it can show their
expertise, but we'll all be on the same page. Err, literally.

Anyway, that would make the July meeting's theme X.

What do people think to that idea? Any improvement ideas? Crap? Good?
Give it a try? I'm thinking let's run it for, say, three months and
then discuss whether it's working.

2) The nice man at Linux Format sent me four (three effectively cus
I'm keeping one) free copies of Linux Format. I suggest we give them
away at Digital Scarborough to people who show real interest ..
keeping at least one copy until the last few hours of the show.

Cheers
J

=====================================================

1 thought occurs, the planned subject will have to be flexible enough to
cope with the possibility that there maybe no interest in the
forthcoming theme (from Linux Format).

Ultimately the theme for the SLUG meetings will have to be governed by
the audience who attend the meetings, if that theme turns out to be the
same as the Linux Format theme that’s good, if not then we'll have to
find a theme that better fits the audience.

Hopefully the FAQ and any other information gathering from the
forthcoming SPA event will shed some light on the future possible
audience (for SLUG meetings) and what they are interested in.

Ian
